  • Practical Cybersecurity and Exploitation Research: Dr. Aiash investigates vulnerabilities within various digital systems, developing methodologies to identify, analyse, and mitigate security risks. His focus on practical exploitation techniques enhances the understanding of how attackers operate, informing better defence strategies.
  • AI and Machine Learning Security: He explores the integration of AI and machine learning technologies within cybersecurity frameworks. His research addresses the potential benefits of these technologies while also considering their vulnerabilities and the ethical implications of their use.

    Dr. Aiash manages multiple interdisciplinary research proposals, securing funding from UK government initiatives to develop next-generation security solutions. Notable projects include:

  • AI-Bility 4Ds (Innovate UK, March 2023 - Present): A project aimed at harnessing AI capabilities to improve cybersecurity measures.
  • Capable (Innovate UK, March 2023 - Present): This initiative focuses on enhancing the capability of existing security infrastructures.
  • Mlighter (UKRI, 2021 - 2022): A project dedicated to uncovering vulnerabilities in machine learning systems.
  • Salmac (Innovate UK, March 2020 - 2021): This project involved the creation of a security assessment tool for Linux Mandatory Access Controls.

    Biography

    Dr. Mahdi Aiash is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Cybersecurity at Middlesex University, where he leads the Cybersecurity Research Group. Specializing in practical cybersecurity, exploitation research, and AI/ML security, Dr. Aiash brings a wealth of expertise to both academia and industry.

    He holds numerous industry certifications in areas such as penetration testing and intrusion analysis and has been recognized as a finalist in the Ministry of Defence Cyber Security competition, as well as being shortlisted for Cyber Personality of the Year. 

    Dr Aiash has been featured in local and national media, providing expert insights on cybersecurity issues and has served as an advisor in the areas of cybersecurity and AI security. His commitment to the field is reflected in his extensive experience managing interdisciplinary research proposals and securing several  fund from UK government initiatives.
