Research activities

He undertakes a number of Research and Knowledge Exchange activities, including the delivery of workshops to support teacher educators and teachers, and supporting interdisciplinary and environmental education. He is currently interested in undertaking research and RKE around Interdisciplinary Sustainability and Environmental Education.  

Previously he was engaged in research about trainee perceptions of target setting, and their role in the development of trainee teachers. Delivering a paper to the TEAN conference in May 2017 on “Targets and Evidence in Teacher Education”. He has also published a practitioner focused book, Targeted Teaching, which presents a range of strategies, well grounded in research, to support school based teacher training.

Biography

Tremaine Baker joined Middlesex University in September 2014, having previously been a teacher in a mainstream secondary school since September 2002. During this time he led a series of whole school initiatives and supported the development of educational excellence across Essex in his roles as an Advanced Skills Teacher and a Specialist Leader of Education. In this time he was responsible for developing a series of on-line subject pedagogy sessions for the TES Institute (formerly HCUK) which were designed to support School Direct trainees on employment-based teacher training routes. 

Since joining Middlesex University he has expanded the school-based training offered in partnership schools on the School Direct Route and successfully validated the Geography and the History with Humanities PGCE programmes. He is now the Secondary ITE Phase Lead, overseeing all routes to ITE at Middlesex University.

He is dedicated to professional practitioner education and is one of the founders, and current treasurer, of the History Teacher Education Network (HTEN) and a leading member of the Geography Teacher Educators (GTE) network.
