Research activities
Rebecca’s research interests are situated within the affective experience of built environments; employing a stratification of processes to capture notions of atmosphere and qualities of place that lie at the edge of our perception. Her practice involves; drawing, printing, making, writing and recently moments of film to examine qualitative rather than quantitative criteria. Framed within the fundamentals of ‘thinking through making’, she pursues an ethos that prioritises the importance of maintaining a ‘state of uncertainty’ to test the boundaries of her creative practice. These principles were recognised in 2021 when Rebecca was awarded the Drawing Matters Writing Prize.
In 2023, Rebecca was awarded Faculty research funding to collaborate with a socially based charity on the Isle of Wight. The priority was to facilitate stakeholder engagement with the process of the design and development of a new build Community Hub. Working with the charity, South Wight Area Youth (SWAY) and Lanyon-Hogg Architects, Rebecca initiated a programme of public engagement workshops to provide a forum for the local community to meet the architect and discuss the proposed building, whilst participating in the making of artworks for the forthcoming interiors, embedding a sense of ownership and belonging.
