Course overview

Middlesex University partners with Lead Partner schools to provide employment-based Initial Teacher Training (ITT). Applicants apply to the Lead Partner school directly through DfE Find and Apply. There are two routes, Lead Partner salaried and the Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship.

Accreditation

Successful completion of employment-based Initial Teacher Training leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) , allowing you to work in any state school in England.

About your course

All courses integrate theory with practice, drawing upon the best available evidence for effective teaching and learning. The curricula for the training programmes encompass the full entitlement described by the ITT Core Content Framework (CCF) (DfE, 2019). They support development in the 5 core areas – behaviour management, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment and professional behaviours, as well as integrating additional analysis and critique of theory, research and expert practice. Each programme is congruent with the Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012) and trainees will be assessed against the Standards at the end of the programme before a recommendation is made for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Salaried trainees also study for the PG Cert Teaching postgraduate award.

Trainees who successfully complete all three programme modules are awarded the PG Cert Teaching and QTS.

The three modules are:

  • School-based Professional Development
  • School-based Enquiry
  • Assessment and Monitoring

All modules are designed to provide an appropriate means of reflecting critically on professional development as a teacher and engage in school-based research to improve practice. This PGCert and the associated assignments have been designed as an integral part school-based training and will enable trainees to develop as a reflective learners and teachers, with the additional benefit of academic credits, which can be carried forwards towards an MA degree.

Teaching and learning

Trainees attend a programme of training sessions at the university which are taught by phase and subject experts. The partner schools also provide training in the school setting in addition to a dedicated mentor who supports the trainee’s learning journey in the school setting.

The training sessions are spread throughout the year with trainees attending one day each week for most weeks.

However, during Terms 1 and 2, they will attend university for some full weeks in order to complete the statutory 4 weeks (equivalent) of Intensive Training and Practice.

During the last 6 weeks of the course, trainees will be in school full time and teaching at least an 80% timetable load.
