This course is designed for students who already have an UG Degree and are looking to gain an NMC registered qualification in Mental Health Nursing.
Developed in partnership with our NHS trust partners, you will learn the essential nursing skills needed to provide compassionate and effective care for people with mental health issues.

About your course
*Subject to NMC Validation* Through your two years of study, key modules will provide the necessary theory to meet Nursing and Midwifery Council standards of proficiency for nursing, which include science, expansive learning for professional practice and nursing knowledge. During your time in clinical practice (on placement) you will experience the nursing care across healthcare, and in a varied of clinical areas. Your learning will be integrated with other students from our Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education to share your learning with other midwifery, nursing and social work students.
You will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in meeting the fundamental care needs of people across their lifespan, with a range of physical, mental, cognitive and behavioural health challenges. You will demonstrate high standards of professional conduct in line with the NMC code in all aspects of your practice and be able to carry out a range of procedures, under supervision, that are expected of you at this level, in a variety of health and social care settings.
This module will provide you with an introduction to the field of Mental Health nursing science. It will examine key Mental Health conditions identifying signs and symptoms of physical illness, aetiology and onset, progression of the condition, and prognosis. It will explore the underpinning anatomy and physiology and associated pathology of physical illness as it relates to Mental Health nursing.
This module aims to build upon and consolidate your knowledge and skills to manage and lead as an accountable, responsible, emotionally intelligent nurse. It will support you to understand your own learning needs, and that of others so that you can evaluate and investigate complex problems, and socially engaging nursing practice.
This module aims to help you develop knowledge and skills required to assess, plan, and implement personalised care across the lifespan with a range of physical, mental, cognitive and behavioural challenges, across a range of health and social care settings in line with the NMC (2018) Standards of Proficiency and the NMC Code. You will build on theoretical evidence-based knowledge to enhance clinical and professional judgements applicable to the wider perspective of health and well-being.
This module will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in MHN3803 and to consolidate the nursing scientific principles and deepen the knowledge and application to complex Mental Health nursing care. This module will critically review current and best practice in physical care and how this is applied in the context of Mental Health nursing. It also aims to extend your knowledge and application of pharmacological principles that underpin Mental Health nursing care and future potential prescribing practice.
The module aims to consolidate knowledge and skills from the Developing Nursing Knowledge and Professional Practice Module (MHN4801) and will facilitate you to work autonomously in the Mental Health field of practice caring for people across the lifespan with a range of physical, mental, cognitive and behavioural challenges.

Teaching
Teaching/learning approaches are integrated with assessment arrangements to facilitate Post-Graduate achievement of the learning outcomes for this module. There will be an emphasis on experiential learning, utilising the students’ own prior and practice experience and prepared case study material. Students will work on these individually, in small groups and in action learning sets. Other learning and teaching approaches will include formal study materials on My Learning with reference to e-journals; directed reading; Graduate- led seminars; workshops; service user input; and role play. Learning and teaching will be delivered on campus and at Stone X Simulation suite.

You will undertake a range of assessments across the two years, which will consist of essay, poster presentations, narrated presentations, drug calculation exam, simulation, and quality improvement projects. You will be formatively and summatively assessed, whereby the formative assessment will provide an opportunity to gain feedback to support your summative assessed. You will also be assessed in clinical practice via an electronic practice assessment document.

Placements
We maintain strong partnership relationships with NHS and independent health and social care organisations so that you’ll have access to excellent placement opportunities as a nursing or midwifery student.
We have approximately 500 pre-registration students out on placement at any one time, with over 400 placements being utilised.
You must satisfy the National and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements to achieve a minimum of 2300 hours in practice during the whole of their programme, to gain professional registration with the NMC. Up to 450 hrs of the 2300 will be met through Simulated Practice Learning. Practice experiences can take place in an approved learning environment across NHS Trusts that are part of NHS London and in the independent and private sector.
Duration of a placement is 25 weeks per year.

Entry requirements
Qualifications
Students must have an undergraduate honour's degree, 2.2 or above and no more than 5 years old.
Please note that we can only accept your application for consideration if you have already obtained your GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English at the appropriate level prior to applying.
Apprenticeship students must be employed within one of our partner organisations.
Additional requirements
You must be digitally literate as all recruitment processes and many teaching and learning activities within the programme involve the use of technology and digital processes.
You are required to demonstrate that you have experience of working. This does not have to be in the field of health care.
You must provide one suitable reference.
