Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) Learning Academy provides outstanding paediatric healthcare, education, training, and development that drives improvements in paediatric care across the world.
GOSH is an acute specialist paediatric hospital with a mission to provide world-class care to children and young people with rare, complex, and difficult-to-treat conditions, giving our learners exposure to specialist cases that are hard to find anywhere else in the world. The aim of the GOSH Learning Academy (GLA) is to ensure all healthcare professionals, receive continual support, education, and specialist training to enhance their skills at every stage of their career in the field of paediatric healthcare.
You can choose to study a standalone module that will increase your knowledge and competence in your specialist area, or to build a selection of modules into a recognised programme such as a Graduate Certificate (GradCert), Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert), Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) or Master’s (MSc), including awards in specialist areas.

About your course
You can take any of the optional modules listed below as a standalone module at either level 6 or level 7 (for 15 or 30 credits – see module pages for details) or work towards a 180 UK credit MSc programme in Paediatrics & Child Healthcare Practice.

- Optional modules totalling 120 credits (minimum 90 credits at level 7)
- One compulsory project at level 7 (60 credits)
Learners also have the option to ‘step off’ the programme and gain one of the following.

- PGDip Paediatrics & Child Healthcare Practice - 120 UK credit, MSc level programme consisting of optional modules (minimum 90 credits at level 7)
- PGCert Paediatrics & Child Healthcare Practice - 60 UK credit, MSc level programme consisting of consisting of optional modules at level 7
- GradCert Paediatrics & Child Healthcare Practice - 60 UK credit, graduate programme consisting of optional modules at level 6
All awards allow the option to specialise in either Oncology or Critical Care.
A programme planning meeting will take place to help you determine the modules to be undertaken, any accredited learning and the options for recognition of prior learning. The choice of pathway for the modules will be determined by your preferred clinical specialism and your reflection on which pathway will support your role and career progression.

All optional modules are available at levels 6 and 7, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module does not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.

Assessment
The assessment methods of this programme are designed to help you integrate theory and practice, maximise your skills of critical thinking and synthesis and develop and strengthen your understanding of the implications of paediatric healthcare practice. Your knowledge, understanding and competence are assessed using a variety of methods relevant to your area of practice and study. Each module will be assessed according to the relevant assessment guidelines and therefore will vary according to the type and focus of each module.
Formative assessment
This is a key component and is an important opportunity to prepare for summative assessments and receive timely feedback to guide you towards successful completion of your qualification. The types of formative assessment are dependent upon modules undertaken and may include written critical and analytical case studies, peer presentations, online quizzes, and reflective discussions.
Summative assessment
This will vary depending on modules chosen. It may include but is not limited to case studies and critical reflection on practice, practice-based portfolios, service reviews, reports, Objective Structured Clinical Assessments (OSCAs), viva voce, quality improvement projects and presentation of research findings through podcasts or posters.

Entry requirements
Qualifications
Learners admitted to this programme must:
- Meet individual requirements of specific chosen modules
- Be currently working with children and young people in a healthcare setting
- Hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent. Learners who do not have a degree but who have successfully completed level 6 or 7 CPD modules may be admitted to the programme through the Middlesex Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. This will be at the programme leader’s discretion.
- Evidence commitment to study, professional development to date, consideration of a coherent study pathway and plans for future professional development and progression.
- Demonstrate minimum English language requirements. All modules in the programme are delivered in English so IELTS English required with an average score of 6.5 with no less than 6 in a single area.
Additional admissions criteria:
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available in line with Middlesex University regulations.
Please note, this Master's programme does not lead to a professional nursing qualification. Entry onto this course does not require an interview, portfolio or audition, although some of the modules you choose could involve an interview.
