MA/MSc by Research
A Master’s by Research degree provides you with strong research skills training, the possibility to manage a complex project and the opportunity to join the community of postgraduate researchers.
Master’s by Research are postgraduate research degrees at Masters level, offered throughout the University in all represented disciplines. There is no taught component. Instead, you are expected to carry out a research project, supported by specialist supervision.
However, you are expected to attend training and development workshops, meeting university requirements and delivering subject-specific training. Students are supported in their independent research study by a supervisory team composed of two faculty members with expertise in your chosen subject area.
A Master’s by Research degree provides you with strong research skills training, the possibility to manage a complex project and the opportunity to join the community of postgraduate researchers. A Master’s by Research is also an excellent foundation to embark on a doctorate, and can be undertaken full-time (12-month submission time) or part-time (24-month submission time).
Admission
You will gain admission by submitting an application to our research degrees application portal in which you will outline your proposal for a Masters’ level research. If your application has potential, you will be called for an online interview.
Progression
As a postgraduate researcher, you would be expected to attend training and development as required, as well as to demonstrate progress in your research. A Master's by Research student will be required to undertake a panel review (Stage 1 Review) after 2 months (FT) or 3 months (PT). This will involve submitting a report of the work undertaken to date. The review will help us to determine whether you are demonstrating the necessary skills and abilities to progress on the programme and what resources and support you may need going forward. After submission of your final research project (the format will depend on the discipline and subject area), you will undertake a viva voce examination, that will determine the final outcome and the classification of your degree.
