Dementia Awareness Training

This one-day training provides the necessary knowledge and information to prepare staff with confidence in how to manage the holistic needs of the person with dementia. It will be of interest to staff from primary care-based practitioners, mental health and social care professionals working in inpatient and community settings, whose role may include delivering care and support to individuals with dementia.

Course Overview

This ‘study day’ training course is part of a CPD series for nurses and other health and social care professionals working in primary or community or inpatient care settings. The aim is to offer sessions which upskill/ update practitioners on specific primary/ community/inpatient care-related topics. Sessions cover a wide range of clinical, practice and professional issues

About your course

Course content

Research has shown that the end of life care needs of patients with dementia and their families, are poorly understood and poorly addressed.

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  1. Exhibit a greater understanding of dementia, its prevalence and its impact upon individuals
  2. Consider the assessment skills required and state how physical health difficulties may exacerbate or mimic symptoms of dementia (focus on depression)
  3. Engage in reflective evaluation of caring interventions
  4. Describe a person-centred approach to care including the RCN SPACE tool, the ‘forget me not’ scheme and butterfly approach
  5. Explain evidence-based interventions particularly in relation to managing the environment
  6. Describe a more expansive use of communication skills when interacting and understanding the needs of people with dementia
  7. Recognise the role of the carer/family, their needs and the support networks.
  8. State national policy drivers and the effect of these on practice

Learning and teaching

Study mode: Synchronous online delivery via virtual classroom using one of the following web-based learning and teaching platforms (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura new row, Adobe Connect, Zoom).  The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussion, group feedback and recap/quiz.

Fees and funding

There are several funding options available:

  • Receiving course fees via CPPD contracts between NHS trusts and Middlesex University
  • Paying your own fees. This course is £120
  • Sponsorship by your employer.
