Overview
This module aims to develop a practitioner who has greater understanding of how to promote equality, diversity and inclusivity in the care and management of women and pregnant people in the childbearing continuum and their families. To develop a practitioner who has greater understanding of how exclusion and diversity influences care, who has non-bias insight and is able to cater for childbearing women and pregnant people regardless of culture, race, ethnicity and disability. Practitioners will develop the skills and strategies to confidently challenge discriminatory practices.
The teaching and learning strategy is designed to facilitate learning for busy learners, making it easier to study from home as sessions will be delivered online.
You have the option of studying a single module for 15 credits, or as part of a master’s degree at Level 6 or 7.
Particular emphasis will be placed on fostering participatory approaches in a way that facilitates your learning.

Teaching
Active learning will be used to encourage interaction between learners and tutors, drawing on user and community expertise as well as your own experiences. You will be provided with online learning materials and online lectures as well as additional guided reading.
Engaging with active discussion and reflection will enable you to consolidate, and extend your knowledge, and help to prepare you for the assessment.
Course Content
There will include five sessions that will be delivered online with one to one tutorial on completion.
- History and current developments, societal attitudes, discourse
- Unconscious bias, exclusivity, diversity and inclusivity
- Intersectionality
- Neurodiversity
- Ethnic anatomical differences and variations in the physiological responses to pregnancy i.e. hyperemesis, gestational diabetes
- Marginalised groups: young people; physical disabilities; neuro diverse, asylum seekers and refugees
- Influence of exclusivity, diversity and inclusivity in decision making in childbearing practice and multi-discipline approaches to addressing similarities and differences in pregnancy and birth
- Minoritised groups – race, ethnicity, blackness and psycho-social trends
Related law & ethics: Equalities Act 2010, Human Rights Act 1998 and other relevant legislation; protected characteristics
Assessment
You will be assessed through a written work.
Entry requirements
Qualifications
- If you choose to study the Level 6 module, you must provide evidence of successful study at Level 5 or the ability to study at Level 6
- If you choose to study the Level 7 module, you must provide evidence of successful study at Level 6 or the ability to study at Level 7.
