Improving physical health needs in serious mental illness
This one-day training aims to address the physical health needs of people with mental illness by increasing your awareness to consider these needs opportunistically and to deliver physical health checks to this patient group.

It will be of interest to mental health professionals working with service users with schizophrenia and other psychoses under inpatient and community mental health settings.
Course content
During the session, participants will be introduced to a range of common family–based interventions, assessing their role in promoting the wellbeing of service users and current evidence base.
By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
- Develop awareness of the available, up-to-date evidence on the impact of mental health diagnoses on service users, their family members/carers, and their relationships
- Understand the evidence base for family work and interventions when working with psychosis and schizoaffective disorders
- Introduction to key principles and practices from systemic family therapy, behavioural family treatment and family interventions frameworks relevant to working with service users, their families, social and professional networks
- Demonstrate and practice some of these skills/interventions and consider the applicability to your practice; for example, using genograms as an assessment and engagement tool, helping families identify goals for change and develop more effective communication and problem-solving skills, and others.
- Develop awareness of the role of your own family stories, beliefs and values in your engagement and work with service users and their family/social networks.
Learning and teaching
Study mode: Synchronous online delivery via virtual classroom using one of the following web-based learning and teaching platforms (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura new row, Adobe Connect, Zoom). The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussion, group feedback and recap/quiz.
Fees and funding
There are several funding options available:
- Receiving course fees via CPPD contracts between NHS trusts and Middlesex University
- Paying your own fees. This course is £110
- Sponsorship by your employer.
