It will be of interest to all staff working in health and social care settings, including community-based practitioners, adult nurses, mental health professionals working in inpatient and community settings, and students on any health programmes.
Course content
This workshop provides participants with the opportunity to develop their awareness of the causes, diagnosis, clinical presentation, assessment, and management of mental illness.
By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
- Describe what mental health is and recognise what is mental ill health
- Know the causes of mental illness
- Develop awareness of the common signs and symptoms of mental illness
- Know the broad categories of mental disorders
- Understand how mental illness is diagnosed
- Understand the components of psychiatric assessment including mental state examination (MSE)
- Develop awareness of the common interventions to manage mental illness including strategies to promote positive mental health
Learning and teaching
Study mode: Synchronous online delivery via virtual classroom using one of the following web-based learning and teaching platforms (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura new row, Adobe Connect, Zoom). The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussion, group feedback and recap/quiz.
Fees and funding
There are several funding options available:
- Receiving course fees via CPPD contracts between NHS trusts and Middlesex University
- Paying your fees. This course is £110
- Sponsorship by your employer.
