This is an introductory course, and as such it is aimed at staff who have limited knowledge on the subject.
This introductory course will equip you with basic knowledge and skills in Motivational Interviewing. Over the course of two days you will learn techniques to engage those who are not contemplating change and support those who are.
Armed with these valuable insights and basic skills you will enhance your current practice and future employment prospects across a range of settings.
Course content
This is a two day workshop aimed at for a wide range of health and social care professionals who experience client contact and who are looking to enhance their practice, specifically those with a limited knowledge of Motivational Interviewing.
The workshop offers an introduction to the Transtheoretical Model of Change. We cover specific interventions associated with the Motivational Interviewing counselling style.
Delivered over two days, this course explores the following topics:

- Building readiness
- Building commitment
- Preparation to action
- Getting started
- Action to maintenance
- Stabilising change
- The spirit and principles of Motivational Interviewing
- Change talk
- The 4 processes in MI
- The core skills
- Moving from pre-contemplation to contemplation
- Moving from contemplation to preparation
- Moving from preparation to action
In addition to the information, insights and knowledge you receive during this course, you will be provided with supporting materials, including appropriate reading and resources, and a certificate of attendance.

Fees and funding
There are several funding options available:
- Receiving course fees via CPPD contracts between NHS trusts and Middlesex University
- Paying your fees: £110 per day
- Sponsorship by your employer (but not under a CPPD contract).
