Why choose Foundation Year in Accounting and Finance at Middlesex?

This course is taught by the same expert staff who teach on our degree courses. You'll be able to develop transferable skills in accounting, communication and problem-solving.

What you will gain

This course will help build your confidence so that you'll be able to transfer to a full three-year degree. Our expert staff will give you the foundation skills you need if you're not quite ready for a degree or you're just returning to study.

What you will learn

The Foundation Year in Accounting and Finance is offered as an entry route to an accounting or finance degree for those who don't yet meet the entry requirements for degree-level study.

You'll enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. If you complete this year successfully you progress directly onto one of our three-year degree courses in this subject area.

The Foundation Year is for you if:

  • You do not have the right qualifications for a full degree
  • You feel you are not yet ready for degree-level study
  • You are returning to study and feel you need some help to get up to speed with the demands of learning before embarking on a degree.

About your course

About your course

You will study four modules over the year. Each module is one year long which means you have the chance to examine topics in-depth. Get free access to the resources, learning materials and software.

This module will provide you with the experience of a range of accounting projects that reinforce understanding of materials taught. You'll also have opportunities to apply the knowledge gained in further modules.

This module introduces you to the notion of business, its environment, and its domains through literature. You'll develop your ability to source, read, understand and utilise business knowledge effectively. You'll also gain an introduction to business and develop your communication, study and team work skills.

This module introduces fundamental mathematical topics and concepts that are required in a range of business subjects studied at degree level. You'll begin to develop an appreciation of the importance of mathematics as an aid to understanding and describing abstract ideas. You'll cover introductory areas of mathematics including numbers, algebra, financial mathematics and index numbers in a structured and supportive environment. Software will be used to demonstrate and elucidate material and to motivate its use in real world situations.

This module will give you the fundamental written and oral communication skills required for studying at degree level. You'll develop analytical skills through problem solving, build your confidence working individually and as a member of a team, and gain appreciation of research techniques by using a range of library and e-learning resources.

Teaching and learning

Teaching

You'll be taught by an experienced teaching team with a wide range of expertise and professional experience. You will learn by attending lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Seminars and workshops are a great opportunity to discuss what you have learnt in lectures and through independent study with your peers and tutors. Most seminar groups have about 25–35 students. Work is divided into credits of approximately 15 hours of study time. You will need to complete 120 credits per year, which are broken down into modules of typically 30 credits.

During your first year, your weekly timetable will typically consist of:

  • 3 hours of lectures
  • 7 hours of seminars

Outside of teaching hours, you’ll learn independently through self-study which will involve reading articles and books, working on projects, undertaking research, and preparing for coursework assessments.

Our excellent teaching and support teams will help you develop your skills from research and practical skills to critical thinking. Our Sheppard Library is open 24 hours a day during term time. And we offer free 24-hour laptop loans with full desktop software, free printing and Wi-Fi to use on or off campus.

This foundation year is assessed by 100% coursework.

Assessments

We'll test your understanding and progress with informal and formal tests.

The informal tests usually take place at least once per module, from which you’ll receive feedback from your tutor. The grades from these tests don’t count towards your final marks.

There are formal assessments for each module, usually at the end, which will count towards your module and your final marks.

Assessments are reviewed annually and may be updated based on student feedback or feedback from an external examiner.

To help you achieve the best results, we will provide regular feedback.

We’ll always be as flexible as possible and take into consideration any barriers you may have faced in your learning. And, if you don’t quite get the grades you hoped for, we’ll also look at more than your qualifications. Things like your work experience, other achievements and your personal statement.

We accept students with a wide range of qualifications, including combinations of qualifications. Our entry requirements  page outlines how we make offers where we have given a range (for example - BBB – BBC in A levels), and how we’ll make you an offer if you are studying a combination of qualifications (for example BTEC and A level).

  • Mature students (over 21)

    We welcome applications from mature candidates, including those without formal qualifications, provided you can demonstrate relevant experience and ability.

    Academic credit

    If you have a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND or have gained credit at another university, you may be able to enter a Middlesex University course in year two or three. Find out how you can transfer courses.

    If you have relevant qualifications or work experience, we may be able to count this towards your entry requirements.

    You won’t be required to attend an interview for this course.
