Why choose Interior Architecture BA at Middlesex?
5th in London for overall student positivity (National Student Survey 2023).
Passionate about interior architecture? We are too. Together we'll develop your creative and practical skills to turn your imaginative ideas into the foundations for a rewarding career. You'll learn how to think and work like a designer alongside fellow creatives.
Jason Scoot, who leads this course, has been a professional award-winning Architect, Interior Designer and design educator for over 20 years. His specialisms include both exclusive residential and commercial housing, architectural rebrand experiences, immersive story-telling and exhibition design. An RCA graduate where he was taught and employed by Sir David Adjaye OM OBE.
Located in north London, you will be a short tube ride away from the capital's museums, restaurants, galleries and shops with opportunities to build your knowledge and inspire your work.
We also offer opportunities for you to participate in Student Exchanges programmes with many partners in Europe and overseas.
What you will gain
Exploring strategies of reuse, spatial atmospheres and materialities, architectural typologies and hybrid uses, you will test ideas and generate proposals through a variety of analogue and digital techniques including sketching, CAD, AI, modelling-making, prototyping and fabrication. On completion, graduates will be part of the next generation of contemporary place-makers, industry influencers and spatial problem solvers.
Set yourself up for an exciting, successful and creative career. Past graduates have gone on to work in both architectural design and interior design practices, specialist studios and prestigious design companies such as Brinkworth, Virgile and Partners, Dalziel and Pow, 20.20, Silver and Co. and Fitch.
In addition to the three-year course, you can develop your practical experience with a one-year placement as part of our four-year sandwich option. You'll develop practical experience which will boost your career prospect and lead to a highly-regarded additional qualification – an Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice: Interior Architecture & Design.
What you will learn
Interior architecture is a well-established, multi-faceted alternative to interior design. Though the two disciplines are intrinsically linked, interior architecture degrees typically focus on the adaptation, remodelling and sustainable reuse of specific existing buildings, where structure and architectural consideration will empower you to reconfigure sites to dramatic effect.
On this course you will:
- Learn to reimagine the urban environment through architectural intervention
- Design new civic spaces that promote social cohesion including libraries, museums, educational settings and healthcare facilities
- Learn to design incredible interiors, that respond to their context and the local community
- Transform a variety of public and private spaces where you will have the opportunity to design future interiors, that respond to the character and history of your host building and create new hybrid alternatives
- Explore strategies to unlock new potential and promote innovative ways inhabitants will reconnect with the ‘interior’.
You will also engage in a variety of professional approaches that embrace research, capture design development and create imaginative proposals. Spatial planning will be linked with both construction and structural awareness, including the use of sustainable materials and new technologies. Professional drawing standards, together with innovative methods of design communication and visualisation will help articulate design intent.
This course prepares you for a successful and exciting career, one that can help create an individual identity as an independent design professional.

About your course
Our Interior Architecture degree course helps you to reimagine the urban environment through architectural interventions. You will explore the potential futures of structures and environments as they near the end of their current lifecycle. We embed United Nations Sustainable Development Goals within all learning and teach you to think empathetically, creatively, and independently.
We offer a shared year one experience, where both interior architecture and interior design students develop as designers and learn collaboratively. This course equips you with a comprehensive set of industry-relevant skills tailored to the specific demands of interior architecture practice.
We prepare you for a creative career in contemporary design, with a focus on public, real-world projects that include the opportunity to explore spatial agency through new civic typologies that promote social cohesion including libraries, museums, educational settings and healthcare facilities.
Modules
The curriculum focuses on seven core learning strands which are developed progressively throughout the course. You will study four compulsory modules in each year of study. Your work will be divided into credits. Each credit is equal to 10 hours of study time. You will complete 120 credits per year of study, which are broken down into modules of typically 30 credits.
- Identify and explore the spatial principles of interior architecture and design to approach spatial design challenges.
- Articulate a design vocabulary for the interior.
- Develop analogue and digital literacies for articulating design thinking, ideation and iteration.
- Apply an understanding of scale, proportion and spatial arrangement.
Focusing on research methods and practices to inform design thinking, the module explores how people interact with their environment. Through the close analysis of case studies and critical discourse you will be introduced to current societal issues and emerging ideas in professional practice, to explore the public interior as a shared space within the urban realm that is impacted by design intervention.
This module focuses on designing and communicating public interiors to address the interaction between people and their environment. You support your proposals through contextual analysis, translating research findings into design projects. The module encourages you to challenge conventional designed interventions into the public realm in response to an evolving urban landscape.
This module develops an understanding of the critical role of in-depth research into the cultural, historical, political, and socio-economic contexts that underpin the practice of interior architecture, alongside the investigation of materials, construction technologies, and processes that are integral to shaping interior spaces and enriching the experience of interior environments.
This module enables you to test and apply spatial design methods and practices to re-imagine the field of interior architecture practice. Working with and within existing buildings, contexts and communities, students address real-world challenges through their interpretation of the physical environment and its underlying narratives.
- Design processes and practice in a professional context
- Demonstrate knowledge of materials and building technologies
- Apply the knowledge of the nature and operation of a professional design practice or office
- Generate professional design communication ideas and proposals
- Reflect on professional design practice and identify career and development pathways within the profession.
This module introduces you to advanced research methods and practices that synthesise knowledge, understanding and critical analysis of interior architecture as a research-led practice. Through in-depth site investigation alongside critical enquiry into adjacent contexts and issues, the module captures new knowledge and frame major project proposals.
This module equips you with the knowledge and skills to interpret and explore the reuse of existing buildings and sites as a sustainable practice. From initial investigations into the local environment, through brief development and design ideation to the iteration of design proposals and outcomes, you will devise and test architectural interventions that foster social cohesion and inform the creation of a new social interface.

Teaching
For much of the course you will be working on design projects, where you can apply various aspects of your learning, as well as your individual creativity and originality, to specified design tasks. Your ideas and proposals will all be tested and explored in regular tutorials and reviews, in which critical evaluation and guidance is provided through discussion and feedback, from which you will be expected to develop and improve your work. You will also have access to dedicated design studios which replicate the commercial environment, including desktop computers loaded with specific software, and also to the 24-hour library building, sample materials room, 3D workshops (general, metals, ceramics), 3D printing studio, digital media workshops, and photography studios.
You will gain knowledge, understanding and skills by engaging in a series of design projects. These projects will challenge you to apply various aspects of your learning, as well as your individual creativity and originality, to specific design tasks.
The Integrated Design Project serves as the primary learning tool, facilitating the learning and demonstration of subject skills, knowledge, and understanding. These projects vary in scale, scope, complexity, and duration, contained within the modules that comprise each year of the course.
Design projects may involve individual or group-based work, with a strong emphasis on participative and collaborative efforts. Group work fosters valuable professional skills, while peer learning enhances effectiveness. Your ideas and proposals will undergo testing and exploration in regular tutorials and reviews, where you will receive advice and critical evaluation to develop and refine your work.
Your work and progress are supported and developed through a range of learning methods that include talks with industry professionals and thought leaders, gaining insights and perspectives; seminars to interrogate the interior as an evolving field of practice and enquiry; workshops to acquire and develop specialist skills, to be applied across all modules; digital means to enhance research, communication, and design processes.
You will take part in tutorials to support design development and to evaluate communication strategies and media, studio practice to develop collaborative working practices, reviews to present and articulate design proposals to receive feedback and guidance, visits to experience real-world contexts and the applications of design for the constructed environment, independent study to develop autonomy in research, critical and reflective analysis, decision making and self-management.
The course uses our virtual learning environment and a variety of media and tools to support you with your module learning objectives and outcomes.
You will be based at our north London campus in Hendon.
During your first year, your weekly timetable will typically consist of:
- 12 hours of supervised design studio, including group/one-to-one tutorials and skills workshops
- 38 hours of independent study, untutored open studio access. Outside of teaching hours, you’ll learn independently through self-study, which will involve reading articles and books, working on projects, undertaking research, and preparing for assessments including coursework, presentations, and exams.

Whether you are studying full or part-time – your course timetable will balance your study commitments on campus with time for work, life commitments and independent study.
We aim to make timetables available to students at least 2 weeks before the start of term. Some weeks are different due to how we schedule classes and arrange on-campus sessions.
Our excellent teaching and support teams will help you develop your skills from research and practical skills to critical thinking. And we offer free 24-hour laptop loans with full desktop software, free printing and Wi-Fi to use on or off campus.
Your learning will be assessed regularly and is made up of 100% coursework.
We'll help you to develop your understanding through project reviews where you present your ideas. These follow industry standard practice for presentations to allow you to grow in confidence when talking through your work.
Throughout your module, all projects reviews are 'formative' meaning that the grades you receive are not yet fixed. Only at the end of the module, and the formal submission of all projects completed in a 'Summative' portfolio are the projects reassessed and the overall grades confirmed. This means you are able to build on the success of your projects, and learn from the formative assessment, to improve both your work and your grade.
There are formal assessments for each module, usually at the end, which will count towards your module and your final marks.
Assessments are reviewed annually and may be updated based on student feedback or feedback from an external examiner.
