Course overview

Why choose the Midwifery BSc at Middlesex?

This course has been developed in partnership with local NHS trusts, and so we’re able to offer you placements on different maternity wards. Your time studying will be equally dedicated to both theory and practice.

Our brilliant Middlesex team have current first-hand experience of the exhilaration and challenges of being a midwife, both in the UK and internationally.

Your role will be pivotal at the very start of someone's life. So we offer much more than just an education. We'll help you build the much-needed resilience, skills and tools to thrive in this wonderful, unique environment.

You'll work alongside many NHS heroes as part of your placement at one of London’s leading maternity units. And you'll gain practical experience with simulation tools at our new West Stand facility, our state-of-the-art training centre which is well known as one of the best in the country.

What you will gain

There is currently a real shortage of midwives. Studying on our highly ranked course gives you the opportunity to become a highly valued part of the solution.

To meet the highest standard of healthcare training, our course is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which means that you'll become a registered midwife with great career opportunities.

Your skills will be in high demand in NHS labour and antenatal wards, as well as within communities, local clinics, and GP surgeries.

Upon graduation, you will be able to confidently assess, plan, implement and evaluate effective midwifery care. You will also have the skills to function effectively in a multi-professional team across healthcare and related sectors.

Over 90% of our graduates are in employment. Why don't you join them?

What you will learn

All our teaching staff have professional career experience as midwives while many are actively involved in practice in the UK and overseas.

They'll be teaching you based on the required theory and their crucial been-there experience. Key modules include anatomy, physiology/pathophysiology, and cultural and psychosocial issues.

Our Midwifery BSc has been developed in partnership with local NHS hospitals, which means that up to 50% of teaching takes place in London's leading maternity wards.

Our degree will ensure you get extensive practice while you study. Clinical practice weeks will require you to work shifts and experience the 24-hour, seven-day care cycle to develop your understanding of women’s and babies’ needs throughout a 24-hour period.

Your caseload will be purposefully small so you’re able to practice proficiency and continuity while being supported by a practice supervisor.

On our highly respected midwifery degree in London, you will:

  • Spend half your time doing practical work at your placement hospital. Our partner hospitals include Whittington Hospital, North Middlesex Hospital, and Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, Whipps Cross, Northwick Park and BHR
  • Use state-of-the-art facilities at our new West Stand facility, a centre of excellence for the London Sport Institute and Health Faculty in the London Borough of Barnet
  • Have access to a midwifery skills lab, which features a range of high-fidelity simulations set up for you to practice skills such as resuscitation and dealing with complex care needs
  • Link the theories of the classroom with the practice of treating patients in a hospital environment in our high-tech nursing and midwifery simulation suites.

Modules

Through your three years of study, key modules will provide the necessary theory to meet Nursing and Midwifery Council standards of proficiency for midwifery, which include anatomy and physiology/pathophysiology, cultural and psychosocial issues, and interprofessional working, legal and ethical issues. During your time in clinical practice (on placement) you will experience the midwife's role in a professional context. Working shifts across a 24/7 care plan, you will develop your understanding of the needs and experiences of women and babies within a clinical setting. Your learning will be integrated with other students from our Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education to share your learning with other midwifery, nursing and social work students.

You will be focusing on building a foundation of knowledge around the normal aspects of pregnancy, birth and postnatal care.

This module provides you with a broad insight into maternal changes during pregnancy and the postnatal period. It will help you develop an understanding of a woman’s support structures as well as their needs during pregnancy and the postnatal period thus informing their supervised provision of midwifery care in a variety of settings.

The aim of this module is for you to gain a foundation of knowledge and skills that enable them to care for women, under supervision, during normal labour and birth. The focus of this module is on the physiological birth process and the associated midwifery care. A grounding in the related anatomy and physiology is included. An emphasis on how physiology can be supported and promoted forms an integral part of this module.

This module provides an introduction into being and becoming a midwife by giving you an insight into the role and provision of care. It will help you develop the necessary study skills to support your learning throughout the programme. This module will provide you with an awareness of professional behaviours and will support you by providing you with skills and knowledge, enabling you to transfer these skills to clinical practice with direct supervision.

This module introduces you to undertaking the examination of the newborn infant from birth to 6-8 weeks of age. The module will provide the foundations of knowledge and practical skills to empower you in being able to undertake the initial examination and daily examination of newborn infants under direct supervision.

You will be focussing on developing knowledge around complexities in pregnancy, birth and postnatal care.

This module develops your expertise in the provision of multifactorial midwifery care in a variety of settings. It will enable you to analyse, plan and evaluate care provided for the mother during pregnancy and the postnatal period where there are complex needs.

This module develops your practical skills and practice-based knowledge, including care planning and decision-making. It will enable you to expand your study skills to include searching literature and critiquing research to provide evidence-based practice. Furthermore, you will explore the wider contexts of health and implications for maternity care within a multidisciplinary team.

This module develops your knowledge and skills in caring for women, under supervision, in labour with complex needs. The emphasis of this module is on deviations from the normal birth process. This module will enable you to build on your existing knowledge around the normal birth process and apply it to women experiencing complexity in labour. An introduction to pharmacology will also be incorporated.

This module builds on Foundations of Children and Young People's Nursing Knowledge and will develop the theoretical and practical knowledge to allow you to continue to validate normality. You will begin to recognise and identify abnormalities and/or potential problems to inform the parents and professionals and prepare for the required care.

This year focusses on consolidating the care given in pregnancy, birth and postnatal care.

This module develops your expertise in maternity care and its provision as you prepare for an independent role. In addition, it will explore some of the politics around motherhood, feeding and maternity care both nationally and internationally.

This module enables future practitioners to undertake the examination of the newborn infant from birth to 6-8 weeks of age. The theoretical and practical knowledge builds on previous modules and enables you to confirm normality, identify abnormalities and/or potential problems in order that the parents, and other professionals can be informed and prepared for the required care. This will enable the provision of a framework of practice and will empower you to practice in an autonomous role as lead professional within the care of the newborn.

This module develops and consolidate your expertise in providing midwifery care for women experiencing complex situations during labour and birth. A focus on equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills to deal with obstetric emergencies is integral to this module. Existing pharmacology skills and knowledge will be built upon. Preparation for independent practice is included.

This module embeds the knowledge and skills of previous years and to apply them to more complex situations, including any legal and ethical considerations. This will enable you to become safe, accountable and autonomous practitioners, performing advanced skills with minimal supervision. The module will enable you to recognise their own role in ensuring effective team working, the contribution they make to the quality and safety of maternity care and the importance of continuing professional development.

You will be taught by experienced midwives who have expertise, knowledge and professional experience that is closely aligned with the course content. The team includes academics, professional practitioners, and technical staff. Your work will be divided into credits. Each credit is equal to 10 hours of study time. You will complete 120 credits per year of study, which are broken down into modules of typically 30 credits.

You will gain knowledge and understanding through 50% of learning occurring in the practice setting and 50% of learning occurring through theory based in the university.

This includes learning groups, workshops, e-learning packages, self-directed study, guided study, discussion boards, videos, reflection, discussion groups, personal tutor support, Learning Teaching and Enhancement Team support, clinical skills sessions, use of virtual and augmented reality resources, clinical practice experience, including case-loading.

You will learn cognitive skills through learning groups, discussions, formative and summative assessments, peer-review, problem solving, debates and directed reading.

You will learn practical skills through demonstration, observation, participation and feedback, clinical skills sessions with the use of virtual augmented reality, case studies, reflection, role-play, tutorials.

The degree is split equally between theory and practice. Clinical experience and practical simulations will form an important part of your learning. You will observe what to do, do it yourself and then improve your practice through feedback. You will have your own caseload of women and will be supported by a mentor. Practice supervisors and practice assessors will support your learning in the maternity setting and wider healthcare environment.

Seminars and workshops are a great opportunity to discuss what you have learnt with your peers and tutors. Most seminar groups have about 45-50 students.

You will learn clinical skills through practical demonstrations and enquiry-based learning. You will also do clinical practice-based learning on placement in your allocated Health Trust.

For one-to-one support, you will meet with either your personal tutor, academic advisor or module leader. We will also share our library of online resources including an online module-specific core textbook (Kortex) and other digital learning materials.

During the periods of clinical practice you will be supported by qualified midwives and link tutors will visit each Trust frequently offering reflective sessions, practice and general support, throughout your course.

Online learning

This is teaching that is delivered online using tools like Skype or Zoom, as well as work that you do yourself using online teaching resources.

Independent study

This is the work you do in your own time including reading and research. Your independent learning is supported by the library and study hub, laptop hire, and with online materials in MyUniHub.

Whether you are studying full or part-time – your course timetable will balance your study commitments on campus with time for work, life commitments and independent study.

We aim to make timetables available to students at least 2 weeks before the start of term. Some weeks are different due to how we schedule classes and arrange on-campus sessions.

For the first time in the UK, midwifery students are using Microsoft’s HoloLens technology as part of their training. Our students are shown virtual reality images of what is happening inside the anatomy, with the aim to teach them about all the obstetric emergencies that could occur. Watch this video from the BBC to see how this is helping our students become better midwives.

Our excellent teaching and support teams will help you develop the skills relevant to your degree from research and practical skills to critical thinking. Our Sheppard Library is open 24 hours a day during term time. And we offer free 24-hour laptop loans with full desktop software, free printing and Wi-Fi to use on or off campus, even over the weekend.

Your knowledge and understanding will be assessed by formative and summative assessments using a range of approaches including written work, presentations, digital reports, online tests, practice assessments, literature critiquing, caseload reflection, report writing and self, peer and teacher assessments.

Specific assessment methods are specified in each module outline. Your skills will be assessed by formative and summative assessments, Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCA), completion of a practice assessment document  (electronic Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (eMORA)) .

Practice Assessment is graded as pass/fail only for that component part, indicative level of achievement will be given but does not contribute to the overall module grade. You must normally receive a pass grade for all modules within a year, to progress to the next stage of the course.

You must normally meet the attendance requirements to successfully complete the course.  Students who accumulate sickness or absence of more than 10 days per year may be discontinued or deferred.

Infringement of assessment regulations and/or academic misconduct may require referral to a Fitness for Practice panel. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and Occupational health clearance is required prior to commencing clinical placement. Automatic deferral is not permitted on this course.

The percentage of the course which is assessed by coursework and practice is outlined below:

Student testimonial

I am beyond grateful to have qualified in such a diverse University. I have learned such a vast amount throughout my 3 years of studying at Middlesex. Between caring for a women antenatally to caring for a neonate after birth. The satisfaction of providing compassionate care is such an amazing feeling to experience. Being a midwifery student is really something special. As a student on placement I felt very appreciated as I was an extra person in the room to support the women in such vulnerable times, and that never goes unnoticed. Providing care and supporting women and their families throughout their journey is beyond rewarding. I also really enjoyed the theory side of things. You learn so much and in times can be overwhelming but with dedication and the fantastic support that the lecturers provide, nothing is impossible!

Now that I am qualified, I have decided to return home to Ireland. I would like to undergo further studies to enable me to branch out into the safeguarding field as it is an area that I am and have always been very passionate about. I also hope to bring new ideas back to the trust where I will be working.
