The Lewis Master Thesis Award will honour 'exceptional academic achievement' in the field of whistleblowing law and policy

A prestigious new award recognising student research in whistleblowing has been named after a Middlesex University academic for his distinguished work in this field.

The European Whistleblowing Institute has launched the annual Lewis Master Thesis Award in honour of David Lewis, a Professor of Employment Law, which will be presented to a master’s thesis that shows ‘exceptional academic achievement’ in the field of whistleblowing law and policy.

The institute said it pays tribute to the “ground breaking contributions of Professor David Lewis, who is one of the leading legal scholars on whistleblowing research”.

Since 1994, Prof Lewis has been researching employment protection for whistleblowers and has published internationally in law, business ethics, information technology, and human resource management journals.

In 2009, he set up the International Whistleblowing Research Network, which now has more than 250 members and holds biennial conferences in different countries. This has led to the introduction in several universities of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses in whistleblowing law and practice.

To apply for the Lewis Master Thesis Award, the thesis must have been graded in the academic years 2022-2023 or 2023-2024. Students from around the world are encouraged to apply and submit their thesis written in any language. The winner will be decided by the award committee which is composed of experts in the field of whistleblowing law and policy and whose names will be announced in due course.

“I am delighted that the European Whistleblowing Institute are sponsoring this award and am pleased to have my name associated with it. In recent years an increasing number of people have become interested in researching whistleblowing law and practice. I am grateful to Middlesex University colleagues past and present who have worked with and supported me over the years. I hope that the European Whistleblowing Institute’s timely recognition of the value of student theses in this field will result in more people undertaking research, particularly at doctoral level.”
