Scholarships and bursaries

Financial aid for which incoming and current Middlesex students are eligible to apply

We don't want you to be discouraged from university study due to financial reasons so we offer scholarships, awards and bursaries. They aren't like a loan because you don't need to pay them back.

We award them for different reasons based on your personal circumstances and achievements. You can use the money to reduce your tuition fees or to assist with expenses.

  • You can apply for more than one scholarship
  • You can only receive one scholarship at one time so if you have been awarded more than one, you will automatically be awarded the one of highest value
  • The decision of the Scholarships Committee about awards is final.

Depending on your family's income, you might also be entitled to more support from the government through loans and grants. See our information on undergraduate finance and postgraduate finance.

We are finalising our financial support for students looking to apply for September 2025. We expect to share full details on this page in early 2025. In the meantime, please reach out if you have any questions about the broader support available.

Postgraduate

Postgraduate prospective students

Amount: Reduction of up to 20% of the tuition fee
Eligibility: Please see details of eligibility below

We offer all Middlesex University alumni who are UK/EU citizens a 20% fee reduction on postgraduate courses. International alumni can benefit from 20% off their masters fees if they are not in receipt of any regional awards. Alumni from our Academic Partner Institutions are entitled to a 10% reduction in fees.

This offer applies to all alumni with a Middlesex undergraduate degree and/or postgraduate taught degree including those who studied with a collaborative partner (subject to eligibility). The award can also be applied twice to the same individual i.e. once for a PGT (postgraduate taught/masters) degree and then for a PGR (postgraduate research/PhD) as long as the individual has completed the PGT degree. There is no separate application process for your alumni award - simply highlight that you are an alumni when applying for your course to ensure the award is applied.

The Alumni Postgraduate Award is only applicable if you are self-financing, that is paying the fees yourself or through a company you own. Where courses are part sponsored such as the MA Social Work, The Alumni Postgraduate Award will only apply to the fee contribution paid by you. For International alumni who apply through our regional offices, The Alumni Postgraduate Award cannot be held in addition in any regional awards.

Please note the Alumni Postgraduate Award is only valid for courses where the future study is undertaken at Middlesex University, London. International campus alumni discounts may vary, please check their websites for details. It is not applicable to Middlesex courses run at our academic partner institutions.

There are some instances when the alumni award will NOT be applicable:

  • Continuation from PGCert/PGDip to masters courses
  • Introductory courses run through the MDX Summer School as pathways into postgraduate degrees
  • PGCE and integrated masters courses, as these attract other types of funding
  • Students in receipt of any other discount or bursary, including international merits/regional awards and other fee waivers
  • Top-up courses
  • Courses at our validated partner institutions

Eligibility

Students who have already been awarded a Middlesex degree and are returning to complete a second programme of study who are self-financing, that is those paying the fees themselves or through a company they own. If students are in receipt of any other type of discount (including regional awards), they are not eligible for an alumni tuition fee discount. Middlesex University students (UK and International students) who have successfully completed an Undergraduate direct-entry into years 2 or 3 (Top-ups), and graduates from validated and franchise institutions would receive a 20% discount. Again this is dependent on them not being in receipt of any other regional award or Scholarship. This award is not applicable to students being sponsored by an organisation or business.

The University offers all Alumni a 20% fee reduction on postgraduate courses and postgraduate research degree study. This scheme is open to UK, EU and International students studying full time or part time postgraduate studies. There is no separate application process for the Alumni Postgraduate Award. Students are advised when applying for a course, to highlight that they are an Alumni during the admissions process to ensure the award is applied. This award is only valid at Middlesex University London. Alumni applying to International campuses are advised to check their websites for details. For the avoidance of doubt, an Alumni award is not applicable where a student is moving from a foundation course to an Undergraduate degree or to a PGCE course.

CPD courses

Students who are undertaking a Continuing Professional Qualification (CPD) at Middlesex University, or are completing a single module of study under a CPD qualification will not be entitled to the alumni discount.

Support while you study

Financial support while you study

Living Costs Fund

The Living Costs Fund, which is available throughout the academic year, is designed to provide a safety net to help you to continue to study. The fund provides support for small unexpected costs and support, as you adjust to higher living costs whilst studying. The fund is open to all enrolled students, or those retaking modules this year. Money or food vouchers don’t need to be repaid, and you can apply more than once.

Laptop Loan Scheme

We understand not everyone will have access to a personal laptop, but we’re determined to make sure this doesn’t hinder your learning. Laptops are accessible to all via our laptop loan scheme. During the pandemic, we purchased an extra 1000 additional laptops, meaning access is better than ever before.

MDX is the only UK university to provide all students with free personal learning materials to assist with their studies

  • The majority of students will receive the core book from their reading list for free as a personal e-book.
  • Students who require the Adobe Creative Suite for their course will receive access for free, meaning you’re able to access industry standard software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and much more.
  • All printing for your course is free (but we strive to be as green as possible by working digitally)
