Why choose a Foundation Year in Business at Middlesex?
This course is a stepping-stone course to one of our three-year courses Business.
A foundation year might be a good choice for you if you don't have the right qualifications yet or feel ready for degree-level study. Or perhaps you are returning to study and want to get up to speed before starting a degree.
The number of students who progress to degree study is very high and in fact, have gone on to become some of our most successful graduates.
You will need to enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. When you complete this year successfully you will progress directly onto one of our three-year degree courses.
We offer:

- BA International Business
- BA Business Management (Marketing).
- BA Fashion Marketing
- BSc International Tourism Management

What you will gain
You will be starting your journey to a full business degree. Once you complete your first year satisfactorily you will move on to one of our three-year degree courses. You will also:

- Develop transferable skills in business, communication and problem-solving.
3 great reasons to pick this course
About your course
You will study four modules over the year, focusing on two modules for 12 weeks in each semester, which means you have the chance to explore the learning materials and develop the skills in depth quickly.
The module enables you to develop an understanding of the foundations of business, law and social science disciplines. This will be achieved by introducing you to key concepts, principles and schools of thought in your respective subject areas, as well as how you intersect with each other which are then explored in the context of real-life events selected. You will apply your subject knowledge to news and case study scenarios and develop an appreciation of the complexity of such events.
This module will give you the fundamental written and oral communication skills required for studying at degree level. You'll develop analytical skills through problem solving, build your confidence working individually and as a member of a team, and gain appreciation of research techniques by using a range of library and e-learning resources.
This module will give you confidence to understand and explore data relevant to your field of study. You will be introduced to the fundamental quantitative ideas that you will need throughout your degree and career. These ideas will be illustrated and explored through current, real-life datasets. By the end of the course you will have experience of analysing a wide variety of datasets relevant to your discipline, and communicating your findings.
It will also develop your skill and confidence in using software to perform mathematical calculations, and help you appreciate data analysis in a wider context: you will be taught in mixed-programme groups that include business, law and social sciences students, so you will appreciate the application of quantitative methods to these other areas.
This module develops your understanding of the steps and activities involved in undertaking a business project. You will also be introduced to a range of research methods to develop your ability to take an academically rigorous approach to applied projects. You will develop confidence and competence in reviewing, evaluating, summarising and presenting a variety of sources of secondary information in a structured manner. You will learn to develop an argument, develop decision-making, problem-solving, planning, evaluation and presentation skills to develop your abilities.

Teaching
You'll be taught by an experienced teaching team with a wide range of expertise and professional experience.
You will learn by attending lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Seminars and workshops are a great opportunity to discuss what you have learnt in lectures and through independent study with your peers and tutors.
You will be studying at our north London campus in Hendon.
Whether you are studying full or part-time – your course timetable will balance your study commitments on campus with time for work, life commitments and independent study.
We aim to make timetables available to students at least 2 weeks before the start of term. Some weeks are different due to how we schedule classes and arrange on-campus sessions.
Outside of teaching hours, you’ll learn independently through self-study which will involve reading articles and books, working on projects, undertaking research, and preparing for assessments including coursework, presentations and exams.
Our excellent teaching and support teams will help you develop your skills from research and practical skills to critical thinking. And we offer free 24-hour laptop loans with full desktop software, free printing and Wi-Fi to use on or off campus.
Your learning will be assessed regularly and is made up of 100% coursework.
Assessments
We'll test your understanding and progress with informal and formal tests.
The informal tests usually take place at least once per module, from which you’ll receive feedback from your tutor. The grades from these tests don’t count towards your final marks.
There are formal assessments for each module, usually at the end, which will count towards your module and your final marks.
Assessments are reviewed annually and may be updated based on student feedback or feedback from an external examiner.
To help you achieve the best results, we will provide regular feedback.
